Tel Aviv, February 14: The Manipur Gorkha Community Israel successfully organised nized the first-ever Sahid Niranjan Singh Chettri Memorial Football Tournament on February 13 and 14 at the Rokach Boulevard football ground in Tel Aviv, honouring the first Indian Gorkha soldier to attain martyrdom.
Subedar Niranjan Singh Chettri was hanged by the British at Kangla Fort in 1891 for his active role in defending Manipur during the Anglo-Manipur War. The tournament commemorated his supreme sacrifice and bravery.
Nine teams comprising Indian and Nepali workers currently employed in Israel participated in the event. The competing teams included Jhapa FC Israel, Kayapalat FC, Seven Star Haifa FC, Rising Star FC, Manipur Gorkha FC, Kiran Yakthung Chummlung Israel FC, United Darjeeling FC,
Lion Tel Aviv FC, and United Rehovot FC.
